Default Another reason to avoid subway subs (like there aren't enough already)

The chicken in your Subway chicken sandwich might not contain very much chicken meat at all.

A recent study conducted by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation has found that the sandwich chain's chicken meat contains about only about 50 percent chicken DNA — or about half as much as fresh chicken from a supermarket.

The findings were part of a larger survey examining chicken items from several different fast food chains that operate in Canada, including Wendy’s, McDonald’s, Tim Hortons and A&W-- but it was Subway’s results that were most surprising to researchers, Fox 5 San Diego reports.

In the tests, most of the meat from Subway’s competitors was shown to contain 85 to 90 percent chicken DNA, but Subway’s oven roasted chicken registered at just 53.6 percent. Its chicken strips scored even lower, containing just 42.8 percent chicken DNA.
remember the "wheres the beef?" catchphrase? time for a "wheres the chicken?" or maybe just a "wheres the meat?" in general considering they didn't test the other meats and who knows what those would test as. although that would probably be a bad taste catch phrase with good ol jared associated with them....

I tried that "grilled chicken" once and it was disgusting. I have no idea how the $#@! you reconstruct something to look like a chicken breast, but $#@! that. You could look at the texture inside and tell immediately something wasn't right.

Isn't it $#@!ed up that we live in a world where you can replace 50% of a piece of meat with something else and still call it meat?

I know people hate regulations, but I feel you shouldn't be able to Frankenstein foods together and still call it something else.

Im really not clear what the study is saying at all.

Are they saying its full for breading, oil and water? Or that theres something unexpected in there?

Genneraally any study presented with results that convoluted is crap.

Still don't like how they can game the English language/law to actually call it "100%" anything though. Just more casual dishonesty in our everyday lives.

soy is being used as a filler in this case. i didn't want to post a tl;dr copy/past of the entire article. if you google it though you can pick your favorite news outlet and they probably have the story, pretty much everyone covered it today. this one i just found has some of the results from the other chains they tested listed which was the first one i saw the numbers for them in.
